16TH CENTURY NAMES FROM CLASSICAL HISTORY AND MYTHOLOGY

            The sixteenth century saw a revival of names from classical history and mythology.  Through the Family Search Historical Records we now have documentation for the use of numerous previously undocumentable names, including the names of classical gods and goddesses used by real people. 

I have omitted names such as Diana, Alexander, Julius, Julia and Dionysus, for which we already have ample evidence of their use in the medieval and Renaissance eras.

            These names have been taken from the Family Search Historical Records, a group of electronic databases that include records of marriages, christenings, and other life events dating back to the mid-16th century.  The Pelican Queen of Arms has approved the use of records from batches beginning with B, C, J, K, M (except M17 and M18), or P for name documentation.

            To keep the length of the article manageable, I have limited the number of examples from a single country.  I have tried to pick the earliest-appearing examples whenever possible. 

           

Achilles
